If you are weighing up whether a motorcycle airbag is worth adding to your gear, it helps to understand who makes it and how the system has been developed. Helite has been building personal airbag protection since 2002, and its motorcycle systems are used by riders in around 50 countries.
Where the technology comes from
Helite was founded in France in 2002 by Gérard Thevenot, an engineer with a background in fluid mechanics and a personal interest in light aircraft. The company's first airbags were developed for pilots, then adapted for motorcyclists, horse riders and cyclists once the same protection principles proved useful across other high risk activities. Helite airbags are still made in Dijon, France.
Independently tested and certified
Every Helite motorcycle airbag carries CE certification, meaning it has been tested against European personal protective equipment standards by an independent notified body. We cover exactly what that certification involves in a dedicated guide.
A choice of two trigger systems
Helite offers both a mechanical system, which connects to the bike with a lanyard and needs no battery, and an electronic system, which uses onboard sensors to detect a fall and trigger automatically. Both inflate in well under a second, and neither requires an ongoing subscription. We cover each system in more detail in separate guides, and have a straight comparison if you are deciding between the two.
Designed to protect the vital areas
Helite airbags are shaped to cover the spine, neck, chest, kidneys and hips. The aim is to support the torso and reduce hyperextension in a fall, and to help stabilise the head and neck.
Reusable, not disposable
If the airbag deploys and the fabric is undamaged, it can be reset by fitting a new CO2 or e-cartridge. There is no need to replace the whole system after every deployment.
Backed by a warranty
Helite airbags come with a 2 year warranty as standard, extendable to 4 years by registering within 30 days of purchase. We cover the full details, and when to contact after sales service, in a dedicated guide.

Frequently asked questions
Does a Helite airbag guarantee I won't be injured in a crash?
No. Like any protective equipment, an airbag reduces certain risks but cannot guarantee complete protection in every accident. It works alongside a helmet and the rest of your gear, not instead of it.
Do I need a subscription to use a Helite airbag?
No. Both the mechanical and electronic systems are one-off purchases with no ongoing subscription fees.
Can I wear a Helite airbag with my current jacket?
Yes. Several models are designed to be worn over your existing riding jacket. Other models are built into a jacket or suit.
Is the airbag reusable after it inflates?
Yes, provided the fabric is not damaged. You simply fit a new cartridge and the system is ready to use again.
How long has Helite been making airbags?
Since 2002, when the company was founded in France. It has been developing motorcycle airbag technology for more than 20 years.
