Your Annual Cartridge Check

Helite recommends checking your CO2 cartridge once a year. It takes about five minutes, you can do it yourself, and it is the single best way to know your airbag will fire when you need it.

A cartridge can slowly lose gas without any outward sign. Weighing it is the only reliable way to tell. This guide covers every Helite range we sell in New Zealand: motorcycle, cycling, seniors and industrial safety.

What you need

  • Kitchen or postal scales accurate to 1 gram
  • Five minutes with your airbag somewhere clean and dry
  • Good light, so you can see the cartridge label and its surface clearly

Removing the cartridge will not set the airbag off.

How to check your cartridge

Find your system below. The steps differ between mechanical, electronic and the Hip'Guard belt.

Mechanical

Mechanical airbags

Turtle 2, GP Air, Roadster, Touring, Vented and H-Moov Mechanical.

  1. Detach the lanyard from your bike so nothing can pull on the system.
  2. Open the cartridge pocket and unscrew the cartridge. It will not inflate the airbag.
  3. Weigh it on the scales and note the result.
  4. Compare it against the weight printed on the cartridge label.
  5. Check the outside of the cartridge for rust, corrosion, dents or damage.
  6. Screw it fully back in, straight and firm, without over-tightening.
Electronic

Electronic airbags

e-Turtle, e-GP Air, H-Moov Electronic, Off Road, B'Safe and Air'fall.

  1. Switch the airbag off before you touch anything.
  2. Open the cartridge pocket, unplug the cartridge cable at the connector, then unscrew the cartridge.
  3. Weigh it and note the result.
  4. Compare it against the weight printed on the cartridge label.
  5. Check the cartridge and its connector wire. You are looking for corrosion, dents, and any nicks or fraying in the cable.
  6. Screw the cartridge fully back in before reconnecting the cable. Do not force it and do not screw it in crooked, as this can damage the cable.
  7. Reconnect the cable, make sure the connector locks, and switch the airbag back on to confirm a normal green status.

The Off Road vest runs two e-50cc cartridges. Check both.

Seniors

Hip'Guard belt

The Hip'Guard runs two e-27cc cartridges, one for each hip airbag. Check both.

  1. Open the protective cover on the right side.
  2. Disconnect the cartridge cable, then remove the red elastic cap holding the cartridge in place and lift the cartridge out of the airbag ring.
  3. Weigh it. An e-27cc cartridge weighs 108 g, so it should read between 105 g and 111 g.
  4. Check the surface for corrosion or damage.
  5. Refit the cartridge into the airbag ring, secure it with the red elastic cap, reconnect the cable and close the protective cover properly.

If you are not confident refitting it, get in touch and we will walk you through it.

The numbers

Variation allowed± 3 g± 3 g± 5 g105 g to 111 g

Every Helite cartridge has its filled weight printed on its label. That label is the number you compare against, not a figure from a website or catalogue, because it is specific to the cartridge in your hand. For example, if the label reads 218 g, anything from 215 g to 221 g is fine.

If it fails

If the weight is outside the range

Do not ride, cycle or work in the garment. A cartridge that has lost gas may not inflate the airbag properly. Replace a corroded or dented cartridge straight away rather than waiting for the next annual check.

We hold cartridge stock in New Zealand so you are not left waiting on a replacement, and it is worth keeping a spare on hand either way.

If your cartridge is under 10 years old and fails the weight check, email contact@helite.co.nz with the cartridge size, the weight on the label and the weight on your scales, and we will look at it under warranty.

The 10 year warranty applies to genuine Helite cartridges supplied by Helite NZ. If you bought yours from us or from one of our New Zealand retailers, email us and we will sort it. If you bought it overseas or from another source, contact whoever sold it to you, as we cannot assess cartridges we did not supply. Non-genuine cartridges are not covered. None of this affects your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act.

Good to know

Other things worth knowing about cartridges

  • Helite cartridges carry a 10 year warranty, but they still need the annual weight check
  • Cartridges are single use. After any inflation you must fit a new Helite cartridge of the same size
  • Only use genuine Helite cartridges. Anything else voids your warranty and we cannot vouch for how the system will perform
  • Store and use them below 45 degrees Celsius. Do not leave a full cartridge sitting in a hot car or next to a heater
  • Use them above 0 degrees Celsius. If a cartridge has been stored somewhere freezing, let it warm to room temperature first
  • Avoid knocking or dropping cartridges
  • Do not put an old cartridge in the rubbish. Return it to us or to your local recycling centre

Not sure which cartridge you have?

The size is on the label on the cartridge itself, and also on the label inside your vest, jacket or liner. If you cannot find it, send us a photo at contact@helite.co.nz and we will identify it for you.
